“The Lost Worlds of 2001”

“The Lost Worlds of 2001” was published 4 years after the initial novel, “2001: A Space Odyssey” was published.

Arthur C. Clarke took notes during the filmmaking and novel writing of “2001: A Space Odyssey.” In “The Lost Worlds of 2001,” Clarke explains the background information and the creation process of making “2001: A Space Odyssey.” Clarke also mentions problems in the production.

The film director, Stanley Kubrick was the perfectionist and the level of requests was very high. Clarke often encountered difficulties and had a tough time working out. Everytime the two finished discussion, Clarke got completely exhausted.

Clarke had to write alternative screenplays again and again for the director Kubrick. The book includes many screenplay writings, which were excluded from the final piece. Alternative stories about Frank Poole and HAL 9000 can also be seen.

More detailed descriptions about the characters such as Moon-Watcher, Dr. Heywood Floyd, Captain David Bowman and Frank Poole can be found.

The short story “The Sentinel” is also included, which was the main source material provided inspirations for “2001: A Space Odyssey.”
